Cappy Capper
Professional Sailing coach and master coach trainer for us sailing

Cappy Capper is one of three US Sailing Master Coach Trainers in the United States and a College Sailing Hall of Fame Coach. Capper has coached yacht club, high school, and college sailing teams as well as managing programs throughout his career. He started coaching sailing at the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago in 1984. After a decade at Columbia, Cappy spent the next twenty years as the Executive Director of the Wayzata Community Sailing Center. While at Wayzata, Cappy grew the program to an annual enrollment of over 750 youth sailors. He coached juniors, several high school teams and the University of Minnesota sailing team as part of his responsibilities. He was the Director-Head Coach at Macatawa Bay in 2016 were he coached and traveled with the Sears National Team, Hope College, and the Back River Public School.

Capper started sailboat racing on Lake Michigan in a Sunfish at age five. He grew up in Chicago, racing off-shore with his family and has also competed in multiple national championships sailing in various one-design classes. He podiumed multiple times in the Windsurfing class and skippered a Flying Scot to a Gold Medal and a J-22 to a Silver Medal while competing at US Sailing Championships in New Orleans and San Francisco. Cappy is currently a member of the Wayzata Yacht Club and owns a J-22 on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota.

Cappy has been very active with US Sailing as a member of the National Faculty, Chairman of the National Junior Championships, Member of the Youth Championships Committee, Member of the Training Committee, and a Regional Training Coordinator. He also founded and served as President of the Midwest High School Sailing Association and served as Vice President of the Interscholastic Sailing Association of North America. Capper has been recognized by US Sailing four times; Outstanding Program Director (1995), the Captain Joe Prosser Trophy for excellence in sailing instruction (1996), Outstanding Director Of New Program (2005), and The Marty Luray Award for providing and promoting public access for sailing (2012). Cappy was inducted into the College Sailing Hall of Fame on June 3, 2010 when he received the Graham Hall Award for outstanding service by a college sailing professional.
